Ozzie Sweet's distinctive work for Sport magazine beginning with a Bob Feller cover in April 1949 made him an in-demand photographer. He created the bulk of SPORT's covers from the late 1940s until the mid-1960s. Here's one of his true classics, one where he showed the viewer what it looked like to have Jackie Robinson sliding into you. Ozzie spent hours producing this shot; he actually had Jackie propped up in a horizontal position, resting on a short stool under his backside while photo assistant Nick Scutti shoveled ash toward his feet. This engaging cover shot appeared on the October 1951 issue of Sport.
