One of Sweet's first assignments as a photojournalist was to create a portfolio of images of Alaska that Pan Am Airlines could use as promotion pieces to increase tourism and destination interest. He spent four months traveling 6,600 miles by boat, plane, truck, horseback and on foot over the last great US Frontier. Sweet reflected on this experience: "Pictures were everywhere in this rich and beautiful region. It was a thrill to take close-ups of the bewildered little faces of native children. Every person, young or old, whom I met and photographed, had some quality which enabled him to rise above - or, at least to stalemate - the rigors and bitter demands of this northland."
